1. Be Their Friend, Not Just a Parent

It is normal for teens to want some independence from their parents and to view them more as friends rather than authority figures. However, teens still crave the security of knowing that their parents understand, appreciate, and love them no matter what. If parents can maintain a close relationship with their teens without taking advantage of their authority, the teen is more likely to open up and share with them.

A close friendship with your teen does not mean that they will disrespect you. On the contrary, having friends that you respect and who are there for you emotionally is something to treasure. If you show your teen respect, consideration, and authenticity, you will receive the same in return.

2. Respect Their Privacy

As a parent, it is your responsibility to know where your child is, but it is also important not to invade their privacy. Trust your child to enjoy their time and activities, even when you are not around. It’s important to stay up-to-date with what’s going on in your teen’s life, especially if they’re engaging in harmful behavior or hanging out with bad company.

The best way to do this isn’t to read their diary or invade their personal space, but to stay present and engaged with them. Communicate with them, do things with them that they enjoy, and listen to them when they complain or vent their frustrations. When you show your teenagers that you respect their freedom and privacy, they’ll be more likely to come to you when they have problems.

3. Focus on Building a Bond

As a parent, it’s important to connect with your teenager through conversation. Talking helps build understanding and can provide valuable insight into what your child is experiencing from their perspective. In most cases, teenagers simply want to be heard and feel understood.

Establishing a healthy bond can also improve academic performance, lower rates of depression & anxiety, and build resilience in children. It can also improve physical health and reduce the likelihood of tobacco use, teenage pregnancy, and substance abuse.

4. Encourage Self-Care

It is important for teenagers to learn effectively and get good grades, but it is also essential that they lead a balanced life. Teach your teenagers that sleep, nutrition, and exercise will improve their quality of life. If they do not feel good physically, it will be difficult to motivate your teens to do anything productive.

  • Appropriate self-care will also enable them to focus and do more meaningful things with their time.
  • It is recommended that teenagers get around 9.5 hours of sleep every night. (Pro tip – Coffee is not a good idea for early teenagers because it can interfere with normal sleep patterns.)
  • Too much screen time, especially in the hour before bedtime, can reduce melatonin production and make it harder for kids to fall asleep at night
  • Having a good diet is also important for teens to be able to study well

5. Support Their Interests

Do you ever feel like you and your teen are on different pages when it comes to their hobbies? Maybe you wish they would focus less on things that don’t seem productive. But it’s important to remember that as long as your teen is reasonably managing their time, you should try to support their passions. One way to do this is by observing their interests and engaging with them. For example, you can listen to their favorite music together or let them choose the movie for movie night. This will show your teen that you’re interested in getting to know them better, which is a powerful gift.

It’s important to encourage and take an interest in your teenager, just as it is to praise them. Express your approval of their efforts and let them know when they do something that makes you happy. Don’t hesitate to tell them that you love them, even if they don’t say it back.
